Ohakune with Mt. Ruapehu, Tongariro and Whanganui National Park is a great base to start your bike rides in the region. The River Lodge owner, a mountain biker himself, knows what bikers need to have a great ride and a great place to stay.
We know what it takes for a good ride for a day. We offer cereals, homemade bread and eggs cooked to your liking.
We offer space for your bikes to be stored overnight. Electric bikes can be charged and a workshop is available to ensure your bike is ride ready. At the end of the day, there is a dedicated area available to clean your bike off.
Washing is also available for a small charge.
We know the region very well and have been doing some saddle research for you. Recommendations for all levels.
Funride at the property, along the river and back to the lodge. Fun for the kids or as quick warm up so you can test your adjustments.
We provide water hoses and brushes, that you can clean your bike after the ride. And chain lube is available too ;-)
If you are already driving an electric car, feel free to charge your ecologic car at our charging station. We offer also power for your electric bikes.
We can point you in the right direction and offer a discount with some of our favourite locals.
If your bike is not working properly, you (or we) can have a look at it. Tools are available (but no parts). If bigger repairs occur, we can recommend some bike stores in town.
Take a trip back into New Zealand's rail heritage while you walk or cycle an old coach road. The road was used to carry passengers and goods between two railheads on the North Island main trunk link before they were linked in 1908.

The Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail involves three to five days of riding through remote areas of native bush. The Grade 2-4 trails use a combination of local mountain biking trails, public roads and a jet-boat to take riders from the mountains of the Central Volcanic Plateau to the Tasman Sea in Whanganui.
Starting at the National Park Railway Station, Fishers Track is a mostly downhill trail with spectacular scenery. This Grade 2 track is an excellent backcountry ride for those mountain bike riders with only a little experience. The 17km track begins with a short climb to a summit with breathtaking views of Mount Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro and the Retaruke Valley. The downhill section of trail is 6km long and is a beautiful ride through farmland. Allow 2-3 hours to ride from end-to-end.
Known as one of the best adventure mountain bike rides in the North Island, the 42 Traverse is a 46km multi-use track that travels through the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area. The Grade 3 challenging trail will take riders 3-7 hours to ride, with a number of sections to test your fitness and skill level.
The Tongariro River Trail is a relaxing 15km loop trail that follows the banks of the beautiful Tongariro River near Turangi. As you ride along the lightly undulating Grade 2 trail, you will travel through pockets of native New Zealand forest, as well as mature beech, manuka and fern groves. This 1-2 hour ride offers a variety of scenic rest stops along the way and is the perfect day out for the whole family or those keen to explore the river.
Tree Trunk Gorge trail is a beautiful undulating 12km out-and-back ride among stands of native red beech trees on the lower reaches of the Kaimanawa Ranges in Kaimanawa Forest Park. As you ride the Tree Trunk Gorge track, keep an eye out for the wonderful views of the Tongariro River and the surrounding mountains. Towards the southern end of the track the volcanic peaks come beautifully into view from an exposed ridge.
Its on the road yes, but if you are keen to ride uphill, then this loop is good training.
